A brief guide to pharmaceutical recruitment

To many, the world of pharmaceutical recruitment is a mystery.  Why do pharmaceutical companies use pharmaceutical recruitment agencies to fill medical sales and other pharmaceutical jobs at such a cost?  Why not cut out the middle man and advertise their pharmaceutical vacancies directly?

There are a number of parts to the answer, although it's not too complicated.  If you advertise, for example, medical sales vacancies on the internet, the response can be huge.  It may only be that 20% or less of that response is actually relevant.  It can cost a recruiting pharmaceutical company a lot of money in time spent simply narrowing down the response to candidates who are relevant. Hence the first role of the pharmaceutical recruitment company is to narrow down the repsonse.

Secondly, it may take a long time to run a whole process, eg. advertise pharmaceutical vacancies, wait for responses, assess responses, telephone screen, first interview and so on.  To the manager of a medical sales team, lost time is lost sales.  A pharmaceutical recruitment company is constantly advertising, screening an interviewing candidates.  Therefore, when pharmaceutical sales manager calls with a vacancy, they may be able to supply candidates instantly, saving much time and lost sales revenue.

Thirdly, there's an old principle in business that you should do what have expertise in as much as possible...and find an expert to do everything else for you.  Medical sales teams are experts in medical selling, they will make the most money through selling as much of the time as possible...recruitment can be a disabling diversion.  Pharmaceutical recruitment companies on the other hand are experts in recruitment.  On balance, many consider their time better spent selling, and paying to let a recruitment agency handle their pharmaceutical vacancies.
